Cartoons: From Kids to Adults - An Interview

Remember when the first thing we thought about when we heard the word "cartoon" was "Scooby-Doo," "Bugs Bunny," or "Dora the Explorer?" Now, when we hear the word "cartoon," we also think of more 'adult' cartoons like "Family Guy," "The Simpsons," "South Park," and "Futurama." There has been a shift in the aim of audience for cartoons, and I interviewed my mother, who watches "Family Guy" on a nightly basis. Here is what she had to say...

What is your favorite animation/cartoon on television?
Family Guy

Why do you like this show? Why is it so addicting?
Two Words – Shock Value. The content is completely shocking, and I cannot believe that the TV broadcasters are even allowed to put some things on the air that they do.

Why do you think the Simpson family has been around for twenty years?
The Simpsons are a family of five that go through the same situations our own family of five has gone through.

Have you seen a change in cartoons, aiming more towards adults nowadays than children?
Yes, shows like “Family Guy” and “The Simpsons” are not meant for young children.

Why are these shows “not meant for children?”
The mature content and the ratings say it all. Children can wait until they are mature enough to be exposed to such mature content.

How many hours do you spend watching television per week?
I watch about two hours of television per night.

Do you have any more thoughts on the subject?
I believe that Family Guy and The Simpsons should be left for adults, and if young children do view these shows, then there should be an adult present.
